Q1
What are door closers?

Door closers are door hardware that allows the door to close automatically. They are also called hydraulic door closers or automatic door closers. The door closing speed is adjustable through the adjusting valve. Depending on the demand, there are two speed options, closing and latching.

Q2
What are the different types of door closers?

Depending on the design, door closers can be classified based on where they are installed, how they are structured, and whether the closing force is adjustable.

Based on the installation position, door closers can be classified into surface-mounted closers, overhead concealed closers, and floor springs. Surface-mounted and overhead concealed door closers are usually installed on the door top or the door frame. An overhead concealed door closer is an invisible structure installed inside the door or the door frame. Floor springs are ideal for all glass entrance doors, patch-fitting doors, and heavy-duty doors.

Door closers can also be classified based on their mechanism. The Rack & Pinion is the traditional and basic style. The more recent CAM action design features easy opening and powerful latching.

Depending on whether the closing force is adjustable, door closers can be classified into fixed and power-adjustable types. The former has only a single closing force and is not adjustable. The power-adjustable type can be adjusted by moving the installation position or the turning spring. Different models of power-adjustable door closers have different power sizes available.

A small tip. The speed adjustment valve can only adjust the closing speed and can’t adjust the force of closing the door.

Q3
What is the difference between hydraulic and pneumatic door closers?

Hydraulic and pneumatic door closers are two common types of door closers. In a hydraulic door closer, the spring tension is modulated by hydraulic fluid. In contrast, in a pneumatic door closer, the air pressure control valve controls the opening and closing of the door.

Pneumatic door closers are often installed on doors in the office or residence properties and are shock resistant. Hydraulic door closers are even better than pneumatic door closers in terms of load capacity and shock resistance. The applications of hydraulic door closers are quieter and more versatile. These advantages make hydraulic door closers popular on the market.

Q4
How to choose the right door closer?

When choosing door closers, you need to consider the following factors:

4.1.The door closer type
  • Whether you need a surface-mounted door closer, a concealed door closer, or a floor spring.
  • Whether the door closer should be equipped with a specific mechanism such as a traditional rack and pinion door closer or a cam action door closer.
  • Whether the door closer will be mounted on the pull side or the push side of the door (inward or outward opening). How you open the door will determine whether a surface-mounted door closer should be installed with a parallel arm bracket or have a top-jamb installation.
4.2. A door’s weight and size
You also need to consider a door’s weight, size, and materials to choose the right power size for the door closer. The following list is a reference for the right door closer power size, based on door weight and size:
20 kg 750 mm width door use size #1 door closer
40 kg 850 mm width door use size #2 door closer
60 kg 950 mm width door use size #3 door closer
80 kg 1100 mm width door use size #4 door closer
100 kg 1250 mm width door use size #5 door closer
120 kg 1400 mm width door use size #6 door closer

4.3. Building regulations.
Depending on a project’s requirements, a door closer should meet British or American standards, have a CE mark or a UL label, or any other standards.

4.4. The function and option of a door closer
Depending on the design and installation requirements, door closers feature different functions. Here is a list of factors you might also consider when choosing a door closer:
  1. Fire safety requirements: Look for the fire rating on the door closer.
  2. Backcheck function: The backcheck is often added to a door closer for a heavy-duty door or for a rooftop door that might be blown open by the strong wind. This function provides a buffer preventing the door from being damaged or hurting a user.
  3. Hold-open function: A door closer might be equipped with a hold-open arm, a hold-open device to make the door stop in a specific position. The opening angle is adjustable, making it easy for users to pass through the door.
  4. Delay action: The function delays a door’s closing for 0 – 40 seconds. This function makes a door closer more user-friendly for the elder, children, and disabled people.
  5. Cover: It is a decoration option, making a door closer look square and giving the whole door a consistent look.
  6. Finish options: There are several options of coating finish colors to match the door hardware design and color. The track and arm can be done with satin nickel finish, polished nickel finish, and brass finish. These three kinds of finish are popular for interior hardware design.
We also have special coating color except silver, i.g. black, white, matt black, brown, gold for options.
Q5
How to install a door closer?
5.1. Get the correct instructions for the door closer ready.

5.2. Prepare installation tools
  1. A pneumatic tool
  2. A Phillips screwdriver
  3. A flathead screwdriver
  4. Allen key
  5. pencil (for marking)
5.3. Get screws ready. We recommend wood screws or self-tapping screws for wooden doors and machine screws for aluminum and iron doors.

5.4. Mark drilling holes on the door according to the instructions

5.5. Drill holes marked in Step 4.

5.6. Fix the door closer’s main body and shoes of the elbow-arm (or track)
  1. For the elbow-arm type:
Separate the nut of the elbow-arm before fixing the door closer body on the door and the arm's shoe on the door frame. Next, attach the parallel arm to the door closer body.
  2. For the sliding or track type:
Fix the arm to the door closer’s spindle before fixing the door closer’s main body to the door and the track to the door frame.
5.7. Link the arms between the main body and the elbow-arm’s shoe (or track)
  1. For the elbow-arm type:
Use the nut to reconnect the arms. The main arm and the wall must remain at a 90 degrees angle.
  2. For the sliding track and arm type:
Use a screw to fix the main arm on the sliding track.
5.8. Check whether the door closer works appropriately by opening and closing the door.

5.9. Check whether all the screws are securely fastened.

5.10. Adjust the door closer speed: Follow 6.1. to adjust the closing speed to suit your need.
Q6
How to adjust the closing speed, force, and opening angle of a door closer?
6.1 Adjusting a door closer’s closing speed
Our door closers can have a two-stage adjustment for closing speed: closing and latching. Closing speed is adjustable from the maximum opening through to the final 10 °. The speed in latching can be adjusted between 10 ° and 0 ° before closing.

How to adjust a door closer? You can use a screwdriver to adjust the speed adjustment valve. Screwing clockwise will reduce the speed, and counterclockwise will accelerate. Adjustment with single 1/8 to 1/4 screwing each time is sufficient. Before further adjustment, you should open the door and test the adjusting result. Do not over-adjust the door closer valves to avoid oil leakage and damage.

6.2 Adjusting a door closer’s power force
The power force of a door closer is in general fixed. However, some models have adjustable power EN2 - 4 available. The level of opening power can be adjusted by installing the door closer at different positions on the door or adjusting the door closer's spring tension.

6.3 Adjusting a door closer’s opening angle
Adjustment of the opening angle needs a hold-open arm or a stopper.
Hold-open arm: Loosen the gear screw. Adjust the gear concave angle to the desired position and make sure the two gears fit tightly. Then tighten the gear screw to complete the adjustment.

Stopper: Use a hex key to loosen the stopper’s stopping screw. Slide the stopper to the desired angle and then screw tight to complete the adjustment.
Q7
What can I do if a traditional door closer does not allow the door to close securely?
A normal solution is to make the latching speed faster and let the door closer to close the door through acceleration. However, this method will create noise and the risk of injuring the door user. The other solution is to up the door closing force, but this option can make opening the door more laborious or inconvenient.

Taiwan Daedalus offers a complete line of new CAM Action door closers. They make opening the door easy and provide more powerful latching. These CAM action door closers are ideal for doors in an environment with positive or negative air pressure and in an airtight environment. They also solve the electronic lock’s failure to lock automatically due to inaccurate closing. The new CAM action door closer has full latching power, even without tuning up the speed. The easy-to-open feature enables children and the elderly to open the door without any issue, while the door can be latched accurately.
